2013, New Year, New Beginnings
My goal in starting this blog is to learn all I can about Hawaiian kapa. From tools to processes, from designs to pigments and dyes… I hope to create a repository for my research and a journal that documents my journey. I hope that the knowledge shared here is of interest to others. Perhaps more importantly, I expect to be transformed as a person, as an artist, and as a Hawaiian… as my identity embraces the mana’o of my ancestors….
kuku kapa e brings back soooo many memories, I remember about 20 years ago when I was learning the very basics of kapa making, we would chant this oli as we were pounding the little pieces of kapa. The oli stayed with me for years and years and I can still chant most of it even now. Unfortunately, I simply didn’t have the patience for making the kapa, but I admire the process and those that DO have the patience.
Aloha e Kiihele! If you feel like posting what you remember of the oli you know, please do! … that is what this blog is all about. To record our memories and knowledge and piece together from the kapakahi to the pono no ke olakino… a hui hou!
